Introduction to the Similan Islands Tour

Overview of the Similan Islands

The Similan Islands: 11 granite islands in the Andaman Sea, about 85 km northwest of Phuket and 70 km off the mainland coast of Phang Nga. They've been Mu Ko Similan National Park since 1982, and they're open only from 15 October to 15 May.

So why do so many tours start in Phuket? It has the nearest international airport, about 70 km from the pier, and most of the region's hotels. Funny thing is, hardly anyone sails from Phuket. Tours drive you up to the Khao Lak piers, where the crossing's shortest, which is why a Phuket price includes the road trip.

The main attractions:

  • Donald Duck Bay and the climb to Sail Rock on Koh Similan (Island No. 8).
  • Snorkelling over coral at Ba Ngu (No. 9) and Payu (No. 7), where turtles are often seen.
  • The white beaches of Koh Miang (No. 4), Honeymoon Bay and Princess Bay.

Transportation Options from Phuket

From Phuket it's road first, boat second. A minivan collects you from your hotel in Patong, Kata, Karon or wherever, and drives about 105 km up Highway 402 and Highway 4 to Thap Lamu Pier. That's 2–2.5 hours. Then the speedboat needs roughly 60–90 minutes to the first island.

Where tours actually differ? The boat:

  • Speedboat: quicker and cheaper, often limited to about 35 passengers, but bumpy. Phuket Tours Direct's speedboat leaves Thap Lamu at 09:00.
  • Speed catamaran: twin hulls, smoother and roomier, up to about 65 passengers. The Sawanu catamaran leaves at 08:00 after breakfast in a pier lounge.
  • Straight from a Phuket pier: a few charters do this. Khao Lak Land Discovery puts the crossing at about 3 hours by speedboat, so most operators prefer the road.

Choosing is easy, honestly. Anyone in your group seasick, or travelling with kids? Catamaran. Want the cheaper price and an extra island? Speedboat. And there's no ferry, none at all, whatever you've read; our Phuket to Similan Islands transport guide explains why.

Activities and Attractions in the Similan Islands

Snorkeling and Diving Experiences

Every Phuket tour we checked includes snorkelling, with mask, snorkel, fins and life jacket handed out. The usual spots:

  • Koh Bangu (Island No. 9): coral gardens, often the first stop of the day.
  • Koh Payu (Island No. 7): known for frequent sea turtle and clownfish sightings.
  • Koh Miang (Island No. 4): reefs with tropical fish, rays and the occasional reef shark.

The marine biodiversity is the real draw. Thai National Parks lists hawksbill, green and olive ridley turtles, leopard and whitetip reef sharks, giant morays, humphead wrasse, and, on rare days, manta rays and whale sharks. In season, visibility usually runs 20–30 metres.

Rather scuba dive from Phuket? Sunrise Divers runs Similan day trips with two dives for ฿4,900, picking divers up in Patong, Karon, Kata and south Khao Lak. More in our day trip diving guide.

In the water: keep the life jacket on unless you're a strong swimmer. Stay with the guide's group. Watch for currents off the points. And never, ever stand on coral.

Exploring Koh Similan

Koh Similan, Island No. 8, is the biggest island in the park and the one on every single itinerary. Its main bay, Donald Duck Bay, has a long white beach and shallow turquoise water where the boats drop anchor for swimmers. From the sand a short, steep trail climbs to Sail Rock: a huge boulder balanced on a granite ridge, the whole bay laid out below it.

Worth knowing before you go:

  • The Sail Rock trail is short but steep and rocky. Wear sandals with grip, not flip-flops.
  • Midday is the busiest time. Early-bird tours try to get here first.
  • Off the island are some of the park's best dive sites: Fantasea Reef, Elephant Head Rock and Beacon Point.

Tour Costs and Booking Information

Cost of Tours from Phuket

A Similan Islands tour from Phuket costs about ฿2,500–3,300 per adult on a join-in boat, with transfers thrown in. Published 2026–27 prices:

TourBoatPrice per adultPark fee

Wow Andaman (Click2GoThailand)Speed catamaran฿2,390Check
Khao Lak tours with Phuket pickupSpeedboatKhao Lak price + ฿300–400Varies

What moves the price? The boat (catamarans cost more), group size, whether the ฿500 park fee is included, and where you're picked up; some remote corners of Phuket pay extra. Kids aged 4–11 pay roughly ฿2,000–2,400. On a budget, a standard speedboat with the fee included is the cheapest real deal. That ฿2,200 headline price without the fee? It ends up costing more.

Booking a Tour to the Similan Islands

Phuket Tours Direct is one of the easier operators to book online. Pick the speedboat or the catamaran, pay in your own currency, get the confirmation by email. The rules are refreshingly clear:

  • Bookings for the next day close at 20:00.
  • Free cancellation until 15:00 the day before.
  • If the operator cancels for weather, you get a full refund or a new date. If the tour runs and you don't go, it's a no-show.
  • The speedboat takes nobody under 1 or over 70, and no pregnant women. The catamaran takes children from 6 months.

The company says it has served more than 200,000 customers since 2011 and shows a 4.6 rating from 663 reviews on its own site. For the best deal, book direct rather than through a reseller, compare prices with the fee included, and book a few days out. Weeks out, though, over Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year, when the daily visitor cap fills up.

Timing and Regulations for Visiting the Similan Islands

Best Time to Visit the Similan Islands

The best time to visit the Similan Islands from Phuket is December to April. Calmer sea, clearest water, and from December to March hardly any rain. For this season the park opens on 15 October 2026 and closes on 15 May 2027.

  • Mid-October to November: fewer boats and fresh reefs, but the first weeks can be choppy.
  • December to February: peak conditions and peak crowds.
  • March to April: hot, calm and the best odds for manta rays and whale sharks.
  • Early May: quieter, but the monsoon can close the park early.

Dates and the fine print: our Similan Islands open season page.

Safety Measures and Regulations

Mu Ko Similan National Park doesn't bend its rules. Phuket tours follow these:

  • Visitors may arrive only after 08:00 and must leave by 16:00.
  • Foreign adults pay ฿500 and children aged 3–14 ฿250. Thai nationals pay ฿100 and ฿50.
  • Daily visitor numbers are capped, and passports are registered in advance.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only. No single-use plastics, no feeding fish, no taking shells or coral.
  • The park can close on rough days, and no operator can override it.

Your own safety? Take seasickness tablets before boarding, sit near the back or middle of the speedboat, drink plenty of water and wear the life jacket while you snorkel. Responsible tourism here is dead simple. Leave nothing, take nothing, touch nothing underwater.

Tour Operators and Environmental Considerations

Comparing Tour Operators

The usual operators for Phuket guests, and where each one shines:

  • Phuket Tours Direct: clear pricing with fees included, speedboat or catamaran.
  • Love Andaman: its own pier in Khao Lak, insurance and towels included. See our Love Andaman review.
  • Seastar: published Phuket-zone prices and its own pier at Thap Lamu.
  • Siam Adventure World: an early-bird tour from Nam Khem that beats the crowds, with guides in six languages.

How to choose: confirm the price covers the park fee and the transfer from your area, check the maximum group size, read recent reviews, and ask about the cancellation deadline. Can you afford it? Then go early. An early departure is the one upgrade that really changes the day.

Environmental Impact and Conservation Efforts

Tourism is the park's biggest headache. Before 2018, up to 7,000 people a day landed on the islands. Then the authorities cut the limit to 3,850, and later to 3,325 according to Thai National Parks, although some operators still quote 3,850. Koh Tachai, the worst hit, has been shut since 2016. And every year the five-month closure gives reefs and beaches a break from anchors, fins and sunscreen.

Eco-friendly habits to pack too:

  • Use reef-safe sunscreen, or cover up with a rash guard.
  • Float flat and don't kick near coral.
  • Bring a refillable bottle. Single-use plastics are banned in the park.
  • Choose operators that brief guests on coral-safe behaviour.

FAQ

How do I get to Similan Islands from Phuket?

You get to the Similan Islands from Phuket by booking a tour, simple as that. A minivan drives you 2–2.5 hours to Thap Lamu Pier near Khao Lak, then a speedboat or catamaran crosses in about 1–1.5 hours. No public ferry exists. Tours include the transfer.

Is it worth going to Similan Islands?

Yes, it is worth going to the Similan Islands if you love clear water, snorkelling and dramatic scenery. But from Phuket it's a 12-hour day. Hate early starts, or get badly seasick? Then Phi Phi, or a Khao Lak base, might suit you better.

Are the Similan Islands closed to visitors in 2026?

The Similan Islands are closed to visitors from 16 May to 14 October 2026. On 15 October 2026 they reopen, and they stay open until 15 May 2027, 08:00 to 16:00 every day.

Is Similan Island better than Phi Phi?

Similan Island is better than Phi Phi for clear water, turtles and quieter beaches; Phi Phi is better for a shorter day trip from Phuket, any time of year. The Similans need a long day and only open from mid-October to mid-May. Phi Phi? Closer. Also busier.
