Introduction to the Similan Islands
Why Visit the Similan Islands?
Because nothing near Phuket looks like this. The Similan Islands are granite, not limestone. Giant rounded boulders heap up at the water's edge, the beaches are fine white coral sand, and the water's so crystal-clear you can watch fish over the side of the boat. In the open season visibility often reaches 20–30 metres. Ridiculous, really.
And then there's the marine life. Sea turtles, clownfish, parrotfish and blue-spotted stingrays are regulars at the snorkel stops, and the reefs hold hundreds of coral and fish species. As day trips from Phuket go? About as good as snorkelling gets in Thailand, we think.

Understanding Mu Ko Similan National Park
It's a national park, and that shapes your whole day. Mu Ko Similan National Park was set up in 1982 and grew in 1998 to take in Koh Bon and Koh Tachai. Result: 11 islands spread over 140 km², of which only 26 km² is land.
Park status comes with rules:
- It's open only from 15 October to 15 May, and daily from 08:00 to 16:00.
- Daily visitor numbers are capped. Thai National Parks gives the limit as 3,325, down from up to 7,000 visitors a day before 2018.
- Koh Tachai has been closed since 2016 to let it recover.
- Foreign adults pay a ฿500 entrance fee.
Conservation here isn't decoration. Coral bleaching in 1998 and 2010 killed most of the reef, and the park only announced near-full recovery in 2019. Those rules are the reason there's still anything to see.
Planning Your Day Trip
Available Day Trips from Phuket
Day trips from Phuket come in three flavours, basically:
- Speedboat day trip: the standard. Phuket Tours Direct charges ฿2,500, park fee included, and visits four islands including Payu (Island No. 7).
- Catamaran day trip: smoother and roomier. The Sawanu catamaran costs ฿3,200 with breakfast in a pier lounge and free transfer from all of Phuket.
- Early-bird trip: leaves earlier to reach the first beach before the crowds. Siam Adventure World runs one with Phuket transfers for an extra ฿400.
A day trip package usually covers hotel transfers, park fees (check!), snorkel gear with fins, a life jacket, lunch, drinking water, an English-speaking guide and accident insurance. Pick by priority. Cheapest? Speedboat. Comfort or kids? Catamaran. Fewer bodies on the beach? Early-bird.

Transportation Options: Speedboat Travel
Why speedboats? The Similans are far out, about 65 km from Thap Lamu Pier, and the park day is short. A speedboat covers that in roughly 60–90 minutes. Anything slower would eat straight into your hours on the islands, and those are precious.
The ride? Fast, loud, bumpy if there's any swell at all, with spray up front. The back and middle of the boat move least. A few safety tips:
- Take seasickness tablets 30–60 minutes before boarding.
- Sit facing forward near the middle or back, and hold on when the crew says so.
- Keep your phone and passport copy in a dry bag.
- Skip the speedboat if you're pregnant or have back or heart problems. Operators won't take you anyway.
Seasick easily? A catamaran's twin hulls cut the motion a lot. Public ferry? There isn't one; see getting from Phuket to the Similan Islands.
Understanding the Day Trip Itinerary
How a typical Phuket day plays out, going by Phuket Tours Direct's catamaran schedule:
| Time | Stop |
|---|---|
| 05:30–06:00 | Hotel pickup in Phuket |
| about 07:30 | Thap Lamu Pier: light breakfast and briefing |
| 08:00 | Boat departs |
| 09:30 | Koh Bangu (Island No. 9): first snorkel stop, before the main crowds |
| late morning | Donald Duck Bay, Koh Similan (Island No. 8): beach, swim, Sail Rock viewpoint |
| lunchtime | Lunch on the island |
| afternoon | Koh Miang (Island No. 4): snorkelling, beaches, a short walk across the island |
| by 16:00 | Leave the park |
| 18:00–19:00 | Back at your hotel |
The speedboat version leaves Thap Lamu an hour later, at 09:00, and throws in Koh Payu (Island No. 7) for turtles. Timekeeping's the guide's job, but help them out: be back at the meeting point on time at every stop. That 16:00 park deadline is very real.

Activities and Experiences
Snorkeling and Marine Life Exploration
Two or three snorkels, each long enough for a proper swim. The water's around 29 °C, so forget the wetsuit, though a rash guard will save your back from sunburn. Marine encounters to expect:
- Sea turtles: green and hawksbill, most often at Koh Payu.
- Clownfish in anemones, plus parrotfish, butterflyfish and bannerfish.
- Blue-spotted stingrays resting on the sand.
- Reef sharks now and then, small and shy.
Tips for a good snorkel. Test your mask on the boat, not in the water. Float, don't stand: the coral is alive, and sharp. Look down at the reef, then out into the blue, where trevally and barracuda cruise by. Jellyfish show up? The crew will usually move the group. Don't argue with them.

Relaxing on Coral-Sand Beaches
Similan beaches are fine coral sand, soft and blindingly white. The ones you'll actually set foot on:
- Donald Duck Bay (Island No. 8): the long main beach below Sail Rock, with shallow turquoise water. There are showers to change in.
- Honeymoon Bay and Princess Bay, Koh Miang (Island No. 4): two white beaches about 20 minutes' walk apart through the forest. The island's only restaurant opens 08:00–14:00.
On the beach, swim inside the buoy lines and sunbathe in short doses, because the sand throws back a lot of light. If your tour allows it, walk the path between the bays on Koh Miang. Koh Huyong (Island No. 1) has the longest beach in the park, but it's a turtle nesting beach and isn't on the usual day-trip route. Shame. Fair enough, though.

Booking and Costs
Checking Availability and Booking Your Trip
To check availability, use the operator's online calendar, or just message them on WhatsApp. Booking tips:
- Book 3–7 days ahead in normal weeks, 3–4 weeks ahead for late December, early January and Chinese New Year.
- Have passport details ready for everyone; the park needs them.
- Book next-day trips before the cut-off. Phuket Tours Direct stops taking them at 20:00.
- Schedule your Similan day early in your holiday so a weather cancellation can be moved.
Best times to visit get their own section below. Short version: December to April for conditions, late October or early May for fewer people.
Understanding the Costs Involved
What a day from Phuket costs, 2026–27:
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Speedboat day trip | ฿2,500–3,200 per adult |
| Catamaran day trip | ฿3,200–3,300 per adult |
| Child (4–11) | about ฿2,000–2,400 |
| Park fee, if not included | ฿500 per adult, ฿250 per child (3–14) |
| Phuket pickup on a Khao Lak tour | ฿300–400 per person |
| Extras | Drinks and snacks on the island, reef-safe sunscreen, tips |
The price covers transfers, the boat, a guide, snorkel set, life jacket, lunch, water and insurance. The park fee? Some operators include it, some don't. Budgeting tip: carry ฿500–1,000 in cash for the island restaurant, a cold drink, and any fee your operator collects on the day. Park fees collected at the islands are cash only. No cards.

Additional Considerations
Weather Conditions and Best Time to Visit
Weather here follows the monsoon. December to March is the driest stretch; April's hot but still calm. May to October is rainy season, wettest June to September, and the park shuts from 16 May to 14 October.
- Best overall: December to April. Calm sea, clear water, sunshine.
- Quietest: late October to November, and early May.
- Big animals: February to April, when manta rays and whale sharks occasionally pass through.
Nothing changes the day like the weather. A choppy crossing can mean an hour of bouncing, and when waves are unsafe the park simply cancels the boats. Full season dates: our open season page.

Environmental Impact and Responsible Tourism
Thousands of visitors a day in high season leave their mark. Trampled coral in the shallows, sunscreen in the water, rubbish on the beaches. The park fought back with the visitor cap, the annual closure and Koh Tachai's long shutdown. Your part's small, and easy:
- Use reef-safe sunscreen only (it's the rule), or wear a rash guard.
- Don't stand on, touch or kick coral. Float.
- Take nothing: no shells, no coral, no sand.
- Bring a refillable bottle. Single-use plastics are banned in the park.
- Never feed fish or chase turtles.
Protecting the marine life and those coral-sand beaches is why the park closes five months a year. And it's working. The reefs that bleached in 2010 have largely recovered.

FAQ
Is Similan Island worth visiting?
Yes, Similan Island is worth visiting for the clear water, turtles and granite scenery, even as a long day trip from Phuket. Go in the dry season, grab an early boat if you can, and expect company at Donald Duck Bay around noon. Lots of it.
How do I get to Similan Islands from Phuket?
You get to the Similan Islands from Phuket on an organised day trip. A van takes you 2–2.5 hours up to Thap Lamu Pier; a speedboat or catamaran then crosses in about 60–90 minutes. No scheduled ferry runs, so the transfers come bundled with the tour.
What is better, Surin or Similan?
Similan is better for scenery, beaches and a shorter crossing. Surin's better for gentle, shallow snorkelling and a visit to the Moken village. From Phuket, Similan is the easier day trip by a mile. Surin works better from Khao Lak, or overnight.
Is Similan Island better than Phi Phi?
Similan Island is better than Phi Phi for snorkelling and water clarity. Phi Phi wins if you want a shorter trip, nightlife, or a visit outside the Similan season. Plenty of people do both, honestly: Phi Phi whenever, the Similans between mid-October and mid-May.
