Introduction to Similan Islands Day Tours

What is a Similan Islands Day Tour?

A Similan Islands day tour is the standard way to see the park. You leave in the morning and you're back by evening, because nobody's allowed to stay overnight on the islands. All the classic sights in one go: the Sail Rock viewpoint above Donald Duck Bay, snorkelling over coral at two or three spots, time on the white beaches, lunch on an island.

Similans day trips differ on four points:

  • Boat: a speedboat (faster, bumpier) or a speed catamaran (smoother, more people).
  • Start time: standard departures around 08:30–09:00, or early-bird boats that reach the first island before the crowds.
  • Group size: from 10–25 on small-group boats to around 65 on a catamaran.
  • Snorkel or dive: most are snorkel trips; dive centres run their own day boats.

Get there and the appeal's obvious. Water clear enough to see the bottom at 10 metres. Turtles. Granite boulders like nothing else in Thailand.

Tour Availability and Booking

Checking availability? Open the operator's booking calendar. Khao Lak Land Discovery, for one, showed 53 open dates in the 60 days from opening day. Or just message them. Things to weigh when booking:

  • Every tour operator needs passport details in advance, because the park registers each visitor.
  • Book a few days ahead normally, and weeks ahead for late December, New Year and Chinese New Year, when the daily cap fills.
  • Check the cancellation deadline. It ranges from 15:00 the day before to 48 hours or 3 days ahead.
  • Plan your Similan day early in your trip, so a weather cancellation can move to another day.

December to April is popular. Want quieter boats? Go in the first weeks after the 15 October opening, or in early May.

Understanding the Costs and Itinerary

Pricing Details for Similan Islands Day Tours

What a Similan Islands day tour typically costs per adult, 2026–27:

Type of day tourPrice per adultExample

Speedboat from Phuket฿2,500–3,200Phuket Tours Direct ฿2,500 (fee included)
Speed catamaran฿2,190–4,200Wow Andaman ฿2,190; Sawanu ฿3,200; Discovery Khao Lak ฿4,200
Early bird, small groupup to ฿5,900Discovery Khao Lak Premium Early Bird, max 25 guests
Dive day, two dives฿4,900–5,600 + ฿700 feeSunrise Divers ฿4,900; Sea Bees ฿5,600

What moves the price: the boat, the group size, the pickup area (Phuket often costs ฿300–400 more on Khao Lak tours), the season. And, above all, whether the ฿500 park fee's included.

Usually included: hotel transfer, boat, guide, snorkel gear, life jacket, lunch, water, soft drinks, fruit, accident insurance. Often extra: the park fee, anything you buy on the island, Phuket pickups, tips, and dive gear rental at ฿500–750 a day.

Typical Itinerary for a Day Tour

Seastar's published Similan day from Khao Lak, one of the clearest itineraries out there:

TimeStop
08:00Check-in at Seastar's office, Thap Lamu. Collect snorkel gear, tea and coffee
08:30Depart from Seastar's private pier
09:50Snorkel at Islands No. 5 and 6
11:00Koh Miang (Island No. 4): snorkel at Princess Bay, free time on the beach
12:00Seafood buffet lunch on Island No. 4
13:00Koh Ba Ngu (Island No. 9): snorkel at Christmas Point
14:00–15:00Koh Similan (Island No. 8): Sail Rock and Donald Duck Bay, showers to change
16:30Back at the pier, transfer to your hotel

Timing's built in. The park only lets boats in from 08:00 to 16:00, so every stop is timed and the guide will call you back, no arguments. Love Andaman runs it the other way round, Island No. 8 first. Neither order's wrong; guides choose it to dodge the other boats.

Activities and Departure Points

Activities Included in the Tour

On a standard Similan day tour you get:

  • Snorkelling at two or three reef sites with a guide in the water. Mask, snorkel, fins and life jacket are provided.
  • Hiking the short, steep path to the Sail Rock viewpoint on Island No. 8.
  • Swimming and beach time at Donald Duck Bay and Koh Miang.
  • A forest walk between Honeymoon Bay and Princess Bay on Island No. 4, about 20 minutes, if the schedule allows.

Diving's a different product. Dive centres like Sea Bees and Sunrise Divers run their own day boats with two dives for certified divers, and non-divers can usually tag along to snorkel (Sea Bees: ฿3,600 plus ฿500). Gear and guidance? Dive boats rent full sets for ฿500–750 a day, and if you're inexperienced you may be asked to dive with a guide. More in Similan Islands day trip diving.

Departure Points for Similan Islands Tours

Common departure locations:

  • Thap Lamu Pier (also Tablamu or Khao Lak Pier): the main pier, 20 km south of Khao Lak and 65 km from the islands. The park office and visitor centre are here.
  • Private piers near Thap Lamu, run by Seastar, Love Andaman and Wow Andaman.
  • Nam Khem (Baan Nam Khem), 22 km north of Khao Lak: Siam Adventure World, Khao Lak Land Discovery, and boats to Koh Bon and Koh Tachai.
  • Phuket piers: a few private charters and liveaboards, mostly from Chalong.

Getting to the pier is part of the tour: minivans from Khao Lak (20–30 minutes) or Phuket (2–2.5 hours). Driving yourself? Thap Lamu is signposted "Similan Islands" from Highway 4. On the day, be in your lobby ten minutes before pickup, with a copy of your passport and some cash for the island. Easy.

Choosing the Right Tour Operator

Tour Operator Reviews and Recommendations

What makes an operator reliable:

  • A Tourism Authority of Thailand licence. Khao Lak Land Discovery shows TAT 41/00132 on its pages.
  • Recent reviews on Google or Tripadvisor that mention the guide by name and the safety briefing.
  • Clear inclusions: park fee, transfer area, lunch.
  • A written cancellation and weather policy.

Operators that rate well, and their scores:

  • Khao Lak Land Discovery: 4.8 from 388 GetYourGuide reviews, 4.7 from 506 on Google.
  • Phuket Tours Direct: 4.6 from 663 reviews on its own site.
  • Love Andaman: Google reviews collected on its site, mostly praising named guides.
  • Seastar: published prices and its own pier.

The feedback keeps hitting the same notes. Crews who move the group when jellyfish show up. Drinks that keep coming. Turtles at Payu. And the advice that early boats make the day. The usual gripe? That long transfer from Phuket. More side by side in our tour companies comparison.

Customizing Your Tour Experience

Ways to make a day tour yours:

  • Private charter: your own boat, timing and stops, from about ฿43,400–48,000 per boat. See private Similan tours.
  • Early-bird departure: beat the crowds at the first beach.
  • Guide language: Siam Adventure World offers Italian, French, German and Spanish guides.
  • Special meals: vegetarian, and with some operators gluten-free, on request.
  • Snorkel and dive mixed: book a dive boat if one of you dives and the other snorkels.

Special requests go in at booking, not on the day: mobility needs, small children, dietary rules. And what does customising really buy you? Time, mostly. More of it in the water, less of it queueing for the Sail Rock path.

Environmental and Safety Considerations

Environmental Impact of Tours

Day tours put the most pressure on the national park, no question. Before 2018 the islands took up to 7,000 visitors a day. Thai National Parks now gives the cap as 3,325, though some operators quote 3,850. What followed:

  • A fixed annual closure from mid-May to mid-October.
  • Koh Tachai shut to visitors since 2016.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen required, single-use plastics and foam boxes banned.
  • Park fees that fund rangers, moorings and the visitor centres.

So how do tours help sustainability? Good operators brief guests before boarding, keep snorkellers off the coral and stick to coral-protection codes. Seastar's listings say it follows the Green Fins guidelines. Ask your operator what they do. Then actually listen.

Safety Measures for Tour Activities

What a well-run tour does for snorkel and dive safety:

  • A briefing before departure on the boat, the snorkel sites and currents.
  • Life jackets for every snorkeller, in child sizes too, and a guide in the water.
  • Dive groups led by a guide, with checks on certification and recent experience.
  • Accident insurance included in the price.

Emergency support: the park has visitor centres and rangers on Islands No. 4 and 8, and the park office near Thap Lamu picks up on +66 76 453 272 (get a Thai speaker to call if you can). Divers, note that the nearest recompression chamber is in Phuket. That's why a certified, licensed operator matters. Something goes wrong 65 km offshore? The crew is your first responder.

Not for: pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, and with most operators very young children or anyone over 70.

FAQ

Is it worth going to Similan Islands?

Yes, it is worth going to the Similan Islands on a day tour. One day gets you the park's best snorkelling, the Sail Rock view and its whitest beaches. Pick a smaller or earlier boat and the whole thing feels far less crowded.

Are the Similan Islands closed to visitors in 2026?

The Similan Islands are closed to visitors from 15 May to 15 October 2026. Day tours start again on 15 October 2026 and run until the season wraps on 15 May 2027.

What is better, Surin or Similan?

Similan is better for a day tour that mixes beaches, scenery and snorkelling. Surin is better for easy shallow-reef snorkelling and Moken culture, but it's further out. First time in the area? Similan.

Is Similan Island better than Phi Phi?

Similan Island is better than Phi Phi if you're after clearer water, turtles and fewer bars. Phi Phi's better if you want a shorter trip from Phuket, limestone cliffs, or a visit between May and October, when the Similans are shut.
